Healing with Hope

On the night of Friday, September 3rd, 2011, life as Cara Moro knew it changed forever.

Cara grew up in Apopka and graduated from Apopka High School. She was an active participant in the Medical Magnet Program with aspirations of becoming a nurse. But her true passion was cheerleading. She was a proud member of her high school squad and part of nationally ranked Cheerleading gym.

While doing a cheerleading stunt with a friend, Cara fell and broke her back. She was rushed into a 5+ hour surgery at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, but sadly the tragic accident left Cara paralyzed from the waist down.

Anyone that knows Cara would describe her as bright, loving, fun, spiritual and full of energy. As a 19-year old sophomore at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Cara has been studying to be a nurse and preparing to transfer into the University of Florida where she would finish her degree. Cara loves spending time outside, especially jet skiing at the lake with her family, swimming, and laying out at New Smyrna Beach. This injury has left her with the challenge of trying to relearn how to do all the things she once enjoyed so much, and the basic life skills we all take for granted.

Amazingly, Cara has been true to her character, optimistic, and brave during this time. She knows she has a long journey to recovery and is working hard in her rehabilitation. Cara has also been an outstanding inspiration of strength and hope to her Mom & Dad and all her family who have been by her side in supporting her through this very challenging time.

Cara was recently transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia where she is receiving rehabilitation therapy and learning how to live with her injury. Luckily, the Shepherd Center is one of the best rehabilitation centers in America. However, the cost of her care and her future medical expenses will be astronomical. Her doctors estimate her rehabilitation will take between 12-18 months and at a cost between $100,000-$200,000 dollars. With the thought that this burden could devastate the family financially, we are reaching out to our friends, family, and the community to ask for your generous support for Cara’s recovery. Everyone who knows Cara wants to see her get the care she deserves, achieve independence, and continue to pursue her dream of obtaining her Nursing degree. Her dreams can only become a reality with our help!
